Emerging Author Interviews

Amanda Lieber - Interview (October 2018)

Why do you want to be a published author?

I love books and stories and I want others to experience the same excitement I feel when reading. I look forward to that moment when my manuscripts become books and my characters and their stories come to life in someone else’s world and imagination when read.  I hope that my stories inspire, bring happiness and laugh out loud moments, and also a platform for discussion with sensitive issues raised through their subtle messages.

How long have you been writing?

I found a bag, a big bag stuffed with completed note books, half-filled notes books, scraps of paper, old menus, bits torn out of magazines and crumpled serviettes covered with my scribbles, jottings of observations, characters, plots, and stories.  This bag is about 25 years old.  In my ‘past-life-career’ as an actress and drama teacher (I’m not going to say how long ago that was!)  I wrote poems, plays and adapted books for performances. I’ve dreamt of writing and publishing children’s books for about 15 years.

How will you celebrate your first publication?

I will more than likely jump up and down shrieking with excitement, cry many happy tears, kiss the book about a thousand times and never let it go. And yes, I will probably end up snuggling with it whilst going to sleep at night.

How would you describe your writing style?

My writing varies from sensitive, humorous and sometimes quirky with subtle undertones of absurdity due the influence of my overactive imagination.  I use sparks that erupt from my everyday life including phrases that are yelled out in the chaos of parenting as inspiration.

How has Creative Kids Tales assisted you on your journey to publication?

Since joining CKT and other organisations, I have learnt so much about the Kidlit world.  I’ve attended events, talks, had manuscript assessments, joined writing and critique groups.  I’ve grown and learnt so much and loved every moment of this journey.  The amazing talented people I have met have become wonderful and encouraging friends.  I’m very excited about the next CKT Writers Festival in April 2019 and cannot wait to absorb everything.
