Holly Bidwell - Interview (September 2018)
Why do you want to be a published author/illustrator?
I always enjoyed writing stories as a kid. I still have a fractured fairy tale I wrote in high school where I cast my best friend as Snow White and boys in our class as the Seven Dwarfs. I loved making my friends laugh, I love making my own kids laugh and I'd love to entertain kids across the country.
How long have you been writing?
On and off my whole life, but more seriously for the last three years. I started two novels for adults and got stuck at the 30 000 word mark. I had ideas but something didn't feel right. My friends asked me why I wasn't writing for kids since I'm a professional children's storyteller. When I finally listened to them and gave writing for kids a try, it seemed a much more natural fit. I could unleash my silly side.
How will/did you celebrate your first publication?
A celebratory dinner with my husband and kids, a trip to Haighs for chocolate and lots of squealing.
How would you describe your writing style?
Humorous and engaging.
How has Creative Kids Tales assisted you on your journey to publication?
Creative Kids Tales has provided me with the opportunity to join a critique group. Everyone in my group has their own style and genre so we read, and are read, by authors with a range of perspectives. It's an invaluable experience and everyone is so supportive.
