Emerging Author Interviews

Jacqueline de Rose-Ahern - Interview (May 2017)

Why do you want to be a published author/illustrator?

It has always been a dream of mine to be a published author and to be able to make a contribution to my community through writing. I have always adored writing and reading. Stories are powerful. They are inspiring, informative and uniting. Great children’s authors including C.S. Lewis, Roald Dahl and Dr. Seuss played their part in igniting my passion for writing and my desire to be an author. Their stories are captivating and filled with life lessons. As a published author you are given an incredible platform to support others and help build a more empathetic and inclusive community. For me, I hope my books become tools to nurture tolerance, respect and a sense of adventure.

How long have you been writing?

Ever since I learnt how to write, I have been writing. I am generally quite shy. Growing up I found writing was the most natural way for me to express myself. When I write I feel the most comfortable.

Although writing has always been a part of me, I never showed anyone the stories I wrote until recently. It has been a personal process for me. When I had my daughter about two and a half years ago, I thought it was time to walk the talk and follow my own dreams of becoming an author. My family and a couple of dear friends of mine encouraged me throughout the process. I am grateful for how far my writing journey has come and I am excited to see what is on the horizon.

How will/did you celebrate your first publication?

I will never forget the day I received the advances of ‘Charlie’s Adventures…in Hawaii’ My audacious dream had come to fruition. After shaking uncontrollably I danced around my living room with my daughter and invited my family over for a night filled with pizza, wine and our favorite tunes. I find having good food, great company and dancing is always the perfect way to celebrate life’s happiest moments.

How would you describe your writing style?

Evolving, but at its heart it is a descriptive journey across landscapes and culture filled with adventure!
