Debra Tidball - Interview (April 2017)
Why do you want to be a published author/illustrator?
I love playing with words and creating something to engage and delight children, to encourage a love of books and to speak into their lives.
How long have you been writing?
I have been writing seriously in the kid’s lit genre from 2009 when I completed my final year of an MA in children’s Literature. But I have always loved the written aspects of my employment as a Social Worker – putting words together to create a picture of a person or situation. Even when my uni assignments came back saying I hadn’t really answered the question, as long they said they were well written I would puff up with pride!
How will/did you celebrate your first publication?
I react slowly to shock - even good shock! I walk around in a bit of a daze before jumping for joy, shouting out to all and sundry and then settling down with a glass of wine. Over the next few weeks and months I still get the jiggles when I think about what has happened.
How would you describe your writing style?
Experimental – I don’t really have a style. I like to play with words and form so hopefully nothing is quite the same.
