Writers in the Park - September 2015
by Georgie Donaghey
The Residences, Centennial Park, Sydney
The inaugural Writers in the Park festival was almost over before it began. We had endured pretty much a week of solid rain before the festival. Authors and illustrators from around the country collectively crossed their fingers hoping the day would not be washed out. It wasn’t.
Susanne Gervay OAM, Australian and internationally published author, organiser of WITP brought together a variety of genres for the inaugural event.
Stands from SCBWI, Room to Read, Books in Homes, Society of Women’s Writers, CBCA, MonkeyBaa Theatre, The Dickens Society and The Footpath Library filled the grounds of the historic The Residences, Centennial Park.
Attendees were entertained by Jessica Rowe (Studio 10), Joanne McCarthy (Gold Walkley investigative journalist), Susanna Freymark (Author & Journalist) P.M. Newton (Crime Writer), Joanne Fedle (Author), Sunil Badami (ABC broadcaster) and a variety of other personalities.
Over at the children’s story tent kids were entertained with story tellings by Zanni Louise & illustrator Anna Pignataro, Susan Whelan and Gywnneth Jones, Jo Henwood, Louise Park, Deborah Abela, Meredith Costain and a rare public appearance by Pamela Allen.
There were books launches from Anna Pignataro, Julie Hunt, Dale Newman, Sigi Cohen and James Foley. Illustrator duels and a poetry slam to wrap up the day.
It was great to able to connect with lots of my Facebook friends and share Lulu with new admirers.
My personal highlights: meeting Libby Hathorn, who was very generous to me when I began in this industry. Hearing Pamela Allen read, and attending the book launch of my latest favourite picture book, My Dead Bunny.
And I’ll be there to do it all again next year, Sunday 4th of September 2016.
