Pete Pelican Flies High (Part 2)
by Margaret Bennett-Hall
He called out hello. He was becoming thirsty in the hot desert. He needed some water. He couldn’t keep going. What could he do ?
The Kangaroo and Emu saw Pete in trouble. They took him to their secret waterhole. He had a big long drink. Pete called out a big thankyou to them as he flew off on his journey.
IS IT DRY ON THE NULLARBOR PLAIN?......
When he arrived in Perth Pete saw a beautiful big river. Some graceful Black Swans floated there. They told him it was the Swan River. They were very proud it was named after them. Pete thought Perth was very beautiful.
WHY WERE THE BLACK SWANS PROUD ?......
He also saw a big green area where some humans put a little white ball on the ground. Then they hit it a long way with a big stick. They followed it around and hit it again and again until it went into a little hole. Then they picked it up out of the hole and started over again. Pete couldn’t understand this at all. The humans were all very strange.
WHAT GAME WERE THE HUMANS PLAYING? …….
He then flew to Italy and the big city of Rome. There were lots of Pigeons and Starlings and more Seagulls. But no Pelicans like him. There were also lots of humans there. Some of them were throwing coins over their shoulder into a fountain for good luck. The Seagulls told him it was the Trevi Fountain. Pete wondered why they would be doing that. Once again these humans did some really strange things. Pete liked this very beautiful city.WHY DID THEY THROW COINS INTO THE FOUNTAIN?......
After leaving his friends in Rome Pete flew across Europe over very high mountains called The Alps. It was snowing heavily. Pete was scared. He couldn’t see where he was going. What was he going to do?
He landed on the snow. Oh, it was cold. He found a small cave. He snuggled up in a ball. He was shivering. He felt cold and scared. But the next morning it had stopped snowing. The sun was shining. Pete felt happy again.
NAME THE MOUNTAIN RANGE IN EUROPE……
Pete set off for Paris. When he arrived he found lots of Pigeons.
But no Pelicans like him.
He noticed lots of humans waiting to ride to the top of the Eiffel Tower. He thought again that humans did some funny things. He could fly to the top of the Tower. From there he could see the beautiful River Seine winding its way through Paris.
Pete loved the beautiful city of Paris.
WHY DID PEOPLE GO UP THE EIFFEL TOWER?......
Pete then flew over the English Channel to London. He found lots more Pigeons and other birds. But no Pelicans like him.
Once again he saw lots of humans gathered in a big round arena. This time one of the humans was bowling a red ball to another human standing at the other end of a short path.
