Joy’s Jewels of Wisdom
by Jacinta Farragher
My friends and my family teach me so much,
Like Aunt Bell, who taught me about sight, sound, and touch.
And Brian, who taught me all about flowers,
And giant wombats with magical powers.
Or Aunt Dee who taught me to climb rocks and trees,
And that I should cover my nose when I sneeze.
Or Uncle Karl, who likes to have fun,
But makes sure that we always include everyone.
From Arthur I learned about humour and silliness,
And Evie showed me sparkles and frilliness.
From Olivia I learned about kindness and caring,
And from my little brother I learned about sharing.
Uncle Jock showed me wet willies and wedgies,
And Aunt Jen got me to eat all my veggies.
From all of my cousins I learned to be strong,
And that it’s important we all get along.
By playing with babies I learned to be gentle,
And my grandparents taught me to not be judgemental.
From my teachers at school I learnt maths, art, and science…
But also tenacity and self-reliance!
I learned confidence from Greg, and discipline from Nic:
Adventure from Boo, and patience from Rick.
I learned courage from Steve when he pulled out my tooth,
And from Kim I learned about wisdom and truth.
I’ve learned about lizards and beetles and bugs,
How to make toast, the importance of hugs!
To tie my shoelaces, to sing and to dance…
Even how to put on my own pants!
I’ve learned to use screwdrivers, hammers, and spanners,
To say please and thank-you with beautiful manners.
I’ve learned when to be passive and when to assert,
And how to calm down when I’m angry or hurt.
I’ve learned about happiness, friendship, and fun;
Every day I’m alive I learn something from someone!
Neighbours and teachers, the kid down the street…
I can learn something new from each person I meet.
From my mummy and daddy, I learned love is forever,
And that I can succeed in any endeavour.
Honesty, loyalty, tolerance, trust;
That patience is good and forgiveness a must!
My friends and my family teach me so many things,
But also I know that whatever life brings,
Whatever I do and wherever I start,
I can always rely on my mind and my heart.
