Grandon’s Gifts (excerpt)
by Miranda Hackwill
‘Grandon?’ asked David. ‘What happens when you die?’
Grandon looked at each of the children, their serious faces gazing back at him. He looked down at his hands, his eyes filling with tears. He saw all the children’s beautiful pictures spread out over his lap; James’ trees, Emily’s eagle, David’s butterfly and Bessie’s card covered in hearts; each gift filled with love.
Grandon smiled sadly and looked back up at his grandchildren.
‘When I die my body will return to Mother Earth and become part of the trees, plants and flowers.
My spirit will fly up like the eagle and circle over each of you, keeping watch over you, keeping you safe.
My soul will flutter like a butterfly all the way up to heaven.
And my love for all of you will live on in your hearts forever.’
