Tempest Tantrum

by Dannielle Viera

It begins with the whimper of the wind,
sniffing and sighing till the swell of sound
breaks into a scatter of tears from the sky.

Trees shake as nature spits and screams,
her dark face clouded and scowling as she
showers the ground with fat drops of fury.

Launching lightning bolts left and right,
she sets the air ablaze with angry flashes
that flicker and flare like wild fireworks.

Her raging thunder roars over rooftops,
stamping and stomping across the earth
until the energy of her temper is spent.

Then, with one last fussy rumble,
nature’s terrible tempest settles into
the muffled mumble of restlessness.
