Trapped! (Part One)
by Dannielle Viera
Snowball’s nose twitched. The smell seemed to be coming from the other side of the room. He turned his head this way and that, trying to see what it was. But it was too far away. Snowball took one step, then another, from the safety of his hole. His heart started pounding and his whiskers quivered. Taking a deep breath, Snowball shuffled a little further across the floor.
Snowball let out a squeak and scurried back into his hole. He squeezed his eyes shut, hoping he was not about to feel the pointy end of Jet’s paw. Seconds turned into minutes. Snowball opened his eyes just a crack. ‘I’m okay,’ he sighed.
Snowball froze on the spot, but it wasn’t Jet – it was the rumble of Snowball’s tummy. Rubbing his tummy didn’t help with the ache. Neither did nibbling the paper in his hole. He would have to follow his nose and find something to eat.
Snowball looked out of the hole once more. Just go, he thought to himself. Scampering across the tiles, Snowball noticed that the smell got stronger and stronger. It was coming from a hole he had never seen before. He snuffled around the edges of the hole, moving deeper and deeper inside.
Spinning around, Snowball threw himself against the barrier again and again – but it wouldn’t budge. He crept away from the barrier and sat facing it, eyes widening in wonder. The cogs began to turn in his mind. He had to figure out how to get free!
