Q. Tell us about yourself.

I like to call myself a professional daydreamer as I’m lucky enough to get paid to stare off into space! I’ve spent the last 20 years as a radio copywriter and more recently as a published author and illustrator.

Q. What is your book about?

Being You is Enough and other important stuff  is a fun self help book for kids. Full of cute illustrations and quotes to help kids feel comfortable in their own skin. I see life being so complicated for kids these days and the pressure on both them and the parents is incredible, so I wanted to make sure they’re reminded of the simple things in life that matters: Gratitude, Imagination, Everyone is Different, No-one is Perfect, They’re no alone and other such messages.

Q. Who is your target audience for this book?

It’s mainly for kids aged between 6 and 12, however it also appeals to the kid inside all of us. Lots of mum’s have told me that they’ve shed a tear while reading to their kids because it touches something deep in them also.

Q. What aspects did you find challenging about this book?

Really finding out what issues are facing kids these days. I consulted with parents, educators and the like to get to the core of what troubles our young people and what messages would be best. I also then based it on the idea of ‘what advice would I give to my 8 year old self’.

Q. What does your book offer the reader that differs from others covering similar subjects?

There’s a picture of someone having a poo on page 52, which just happens to be every kids favourite page! There are also a few references that parents will laugh at and a killer recipe for Lemon and Parsley Tortellini! More seriously, I think the book is brave enough to cut straight to chase about what’s important in life and it’s not maths or spelling!

Q. How did the idea for this book come about?

My publisher approached me and wanted to do a kids version of my earlier illustrated books and I jumped at the chance. My earlier books, Frog and the Well: unconventional happiness  and Follow Your Heart: Everyday wisdom for an extraordinary life,  were targeted at adults, but kids quickly adopted them with one mother finding the family copy under her son’s pillow! So it was a natural progression to do a kids version and see what role I could play in helping them with their self esteem.
