Q. Tell us about yourself.
I love to travel and have lived in four countries-New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Scotland.
I have a background in Marine Biology but have done all sorts of jobs from working as a travel agent to teaching English to selling meat pies over the phone!
I love to swim and I practise Yoga every day.
Q. What is your book about?
Ruby Wishfingers is an ordinary girl with an extraordinary name. One morning she wakes up with a strange feeling in the tips of her fingers and discovers that she has the power to wish for whatever she wants. But wishes don’t always turn out quite how you expect them to. Ruby Wishfingers will take children on a magical adventure featuring talking cats, pocket sized unicorns and jellybean rain!
Q. Who is your target audience for this book?
Boys and girls from the age of six.
Q. What aspects did you find challenging about this book?
Reining in my ideas!
I had ideas exploding all over the place when I wrote Ruby Wishfingers: Skydancer’s Escape-far too many for just one book. I’m thrilled it has developed into a series so that I am able to explore some of those ideas further!
Q. Why does your book offer the reader that differs from others covering similar subjects?
Ruby Wishfingers: Skydancer’s Escape is a fast paced, magical adventure with plenty of surprises and laughs along the way. But it also encourages kids to think about the things they might wish for-and also to question what is really important to them.
Q. How did the idea for this book come about?
One day, quite unexpectedly (I was grocery shopping with my kids!) the name Ruby Wishfingers popped into my head. How could I ignore an interesting name like that?! I started to think about who Ruby Wishfingers might be and slowly but surely, a story began to grow.
Deborah Kelly writes stories for kids of all ages. She also writes Haiku poetry which has been published in various forms. Deborah runs a Haiku poetry writing workshop for primary school aged children.
Deborah is available to visit schools, libraries and festivals to share her books and talk about writing. Deborah lives in NSW with her husband, two children and a menagerie of pets.

Ruby Wishfingers: Skydancer’s Escape will be available in stores and online from March 1st 2016.
There will be a very special public launch event at the Newcastle Writers’ Festival on Family Day (April 2nd) 11:30am – 1:00pm.
