Welcome to Creative Kids Tales Serena Geddes.
I am very excited to welcome to Creative Kids Tales this month the exceptionally gifted illustrator, Serena Geddes.
Serena was born in Melbourne and grew up in the beach side suburb of Brighton. Her early years were spent scribbling on just about whatever she could find, including her parent’s piano. A mistake! Even back then Serena autographed her illustrations which guaranteed her punishment although she did her best to blame her sister for doodles she had decorated the house with.
For the last 20ish years Serena has resided in Sydney but often finds herself drawn back to her hometown, no pun intended.
Who knew her drawing talents would take her to Disney’s doorstep and in 1996 Serena began working as an in-betweener for Walt Disney Animation Australia. During her six years at Disney, Serena worked on the sequels to The Jungle Book, Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, Tarzan and Return to Neverland.
Serena spent the eight years after her Disney term in various industries before finding a home in 2009 with New Frontier Publishing. Within the first two years at New Frontier Serena had illustrated seven books.
With now over 25 books to her credit Serena has illustrated for Belinda Murrell and the popular Lulu Bell series. Aleesah Darlison’s Totally Twins series, a picture book with Susanne Gervay, Gracie and Josh. The Why I love series with Alison Reynolds, Samuel’s Kisses with Karen Collum and Row, Row, Row your boat, what can you see? with Angie Lionetto-Civa just to name a few.
In 2012 Serena was one of two lucky illustrators to be picked by a US agent to work on a series of author/illustrator picture books for publication later this year.
Serena’s books are not only popular in Australia but also in the USA, UK, France and Asia. She loves conducting workshops at schools and especially enjoys getting to meet her overseas fans.
And even though Serena has swapped the long hours at Disney for long hours in her own studio her passion for creating characters that kids love is still the most rewarding job in the world to her.
Serena is a self confessed daydreamer who draws from inspiration and imagination. Her illustrations are fun, colourful and just a little quirky but are loved by all who encounter them.
