Welcome to Creative Kids Tales, Wendy Orr.
Wendy Orr was born in Edmonton, Canada and grew up in France, Colorado and USA. With a father in the Air Force travelling was a way of life for Wendy and her family.
From the age of six Wendy was consumed by the written word. She loved reading and writing and knew that she wanted to be a writer when she grew up. Wendy was always writing stories, reading, writing plays, reading and writing poetry, she couldn’t get enough.
At the age of nine Wendy penned a story called ‘Spring Island’ about a young girl who runs away from her orphanage home to live on an island. Little did she know this story was a first draft of Nim’s Island.
Although Wendy was sure she wanted to write once finishing school, the thought of studying journalism didn’t appeal to her. Instead, she tried working with animals in Ontario and studied Occupational Therapy in London.
It was during a holiday in Wales that Wendy met an Australian, Tom. Six months later Wendy and Tom married, after graduating as an Occupational Therapist they moved to Albury, New South Wales.
After the birth of her two children, James in 1979 and Susan the following year Wendy began writing again. In 1986, she wrote the picture book, Amanda’s Dinosaur, which won an Ashton Scholastic competition for an unpublished picture book text. Since then Wendy hasn’t looked back.
In 1999 Wendy’s story Nim’s Island was published, it was later published in the USA and Canada in 2001. In 2002, Nim’s Island was listed on the Los Angeles Times best books list for that year. Paula Mazur, a Hollywood producer, had borrowed the book for her eight-year-old son. Two weeks later Paula contacted Wendy, and as they say, the rest is history.
In 2008 Wendy’s book, Nim’s Island was adapted for the big screen. The Hollywood feature film starred Jodie Foster, Abigail Breslin and Gerard Butler. The sequel, Nim at Sea, starred Bindi Irwin as Nim and was released in 2013.
Wendy’s books have won countless awards including the CBCA Book of the Year, the American Library Association Book for older readers and the Israeli March of Books. Her books for children, young adults and adults have been published in 25 countries and languages.
