Welcome Oliver Phommavanh to Creative Kids Tales.
I was recently introduced to Johnny Khamka, from the newly released 'Punchlines'. I accompanied Johnny on his wild ride. At times I felt as if I was being jolted from side to side on a roller coaster, but always with a smile on my face.
By page 59 I was well and truly hooked. I was quietly cheering for Johnny during my train trips and he didn't disappoint.
With Oliver's style of writing, it's easy to imagine yourself seated front row hanging off Johnny's every word, or chowing down at one of the family bbq's.
I can no longer walk into the chip aisle at the supermarket without hearing Johnny's description, 'A twistie resembling a deformed thumb'.
Or 'my thumbs are buff from gaming'. Oliver's style is reminiscent of Jerry Seinfeld. Observational comedy in its simplest and raw form.
'Shamus spreads his charm thickly across the audience like nutella on toast.' Classic!
But where did it all begin?
It's no surprise that Oliver won the title of class clown early on. And taking a leaf from Peter Pan, Oliver decided never to grow up and continue making people laugh.
From the streets of Western Sydney Oliver fine tuned his craft, putting aside his gnawing ambition to discover dinosaurs. The discovery of an Oliversaurus will have to lie in others’ hands.
He enjoys a bit of the theatrical comedy with his performance and has been known to chuck his cue cards into the air after a school debate. Just for extra effect of course.
By the time he hit High School his career path was set. Comedian. Comedian. Comedian. But a short diversion to teaching first...oh and let's not forget successful children's author too.
He's taken his comedy gig all over Sydney and has also performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
With the writing genius of Griffiths, Jennings and Gleitzman fully absorbed, Oliver was ready to put his words to paper. After all there's only so much audience a one man show can reach hitting the clubs around Sydney.
With four books to his name, Thai-riffic!, Con-nerd, Punchlines and More Thai-riffic! and the promise of more to come, Oliver has cemented his place in the children's book industry.
He absorbs everything around him like a sponge, spitting out serious bits and tweaking what's left until he's ready to throw it at us like a cream pie.
My conclusion: Oliver Phommavanh is a funny guy and this month he's all ours!
