Welcome to Creative Kids Tales, Judith Rossell.
Over the past 20+ years, Judith has created an array of beautiful books for children. She has written 10 and illustrated more than 80 titles, including picture books, junior fiction, puzzle and maze books. Her work has been published in Australia, the US and the UK and has been translated into more than ten languages.
Born in Melbourne, Judith was the second of four children (one older brother and two younger sisters). They grew up in Eltham, 20 km north-east of Melbourne’s Business District in the 70’s.
Judith remembers her happy family life in her country village fondly, filled with memories of a childhood consumed with ballet, music, pets, swimming and drawing. She even won a medal at aged 7 for ballet. School, on the other hand, was not a particular favourite. She did well on the academic side, but found the confines of being told what to do and wearing a uniform, trying. Judith did show an early creative sparkle, writing stories about her teachers and how they would meet their gruesome demise.
Drawing was an enjoyable subject, however, by Judith’s own admissions she didn’t do well in art school. Well, we think she must have done something right.
Judith was awarded a scholarship to study Textile Technology and Chemistry at the University of NSW in Sydney, which she loved.
At the completion of her scholarship, Judith moved on to work at the CSIRO as an experimental scientist, which she really loved.
Never too far from a pencil and paintbrush, Judith embraced her passion for illustrating during her free time. Initially happy with illustrating as a hobby until the urge to create become too great and she took the plunge to illustrate full-time. Judith began writing after she had established herself as an illustrator.
Judith is represented by US Agent extraordinaire, Jill Corcoran, who she met at a SCBWI Conference in Sydney.
Here titles include Withering by Sea, Wormwood Mire, and the picture books Bogtrotter with Margaret Wild, Wrong Way with Mark Macleod, Skoz the Dog with Andrew Daddo, Oliver, You and Me, You are a Star! to name a few.
Judith lives in Melbourne, with her rather large cat.
