Welcome to Creative Kids Tales, Sally Odgers.
Sally was born in Tasmania in 1957 with a pen in one hand and notepad in the other. From an early age she was engaging her teachers with entertaining stories. Although coming from a musical background, Sally found story telling more rewarding and far easier than perfecting her maths, poor co-ordination or singing skills. Winning a state-wide writing competition in her junior years, Sally pursued her passion for writing and by the late sixties sold her first story.
During a sewing class in her later primary years, Sally tested the waters of verse, below you can read an excerpt from that poem. So inspired was she by poetry, it is dominant in her publications and teachings today. More notably, her poems were included in the Omnibus collections Vile Verse and Putrid Poems and Petrifying Poems.
He stands alertly, tests the air,
Then wheeling, gallops to his favourite mare
He’s tall and strong, over sixteen hands
His black mane flies in shining strands
A few short years later, 1977 and Sally’s first book hit the shelves. Today she has produced almost 300 titles.
In 1979 Sally married Darrel Odgers, and since their union the pair have created memorable books for children. Their first collaboration, Time Detectors was published by Shortland Publications in the 1990’s. Shortly followed by Time Detectors 2, A theft in Time and CD and the Giant Cat.
The popular Jack Russell: Dog Detective, published by Scholastic Australia is their most successful to date and in 2008 Jack’s daughter found her voice and became the narrator of a new series, Pet the Vet.
Earlier this year Darrel and Sally launched the Rescue series through Scholastic Australia.
One of Sally’s most rewarding literary achievements was receiving the Aurealis Award in 2001 for Candle Iron.
Sally is the founder of Affordable Manuscript Assessments and with the help of Affa (really Sally with fairy wings) she has assisted many emerging authors on their journey to publication. She also runs online writing workshops for adults and children and is a regular visiting schools around the country.
Her reputation as a supportive force in the children’s book industry is undeniable. The Prints Charming Anthologies, again a Sally initiative, promote up and coming authors together with well-known children’s authors.
Sally’s poems extend to picture books such as Dreadful David, Bushland Lullaby, That’s Enough, Rainforest Lullaby, Goodnight Truck and Angie the Brave.
Her stories have covered just about every genre including sci-fi, romance, fantasy and even sports. But her passion for writing about farm life, animals, rivers, flowers and birds is where her heart lies.
Together Sally and Darrel have two adult children, James and Tegan, and two adorable grandchildren. They share a house with their Jack Russells and a multitude of books.
