Maria believes without children’s picture books there’d be no other books published. It’s their interminable value, that has generated Junior, Middle Grade and YA etc., She enjoys in those same genres.
She’s a primary teacher, public speaker and journalist, who’s also worked in public relations, communications and administration.
As the eldest of seven, Maria started Big Sister Blogs in 2016 to create a space for her writing. She submitted her first picture book at 18 and received her first rejection letter shortly after. She didn’t re-start creating stories until a couple of years ago. She says, she’s 2½ years into a five-year writing apprenticeship with the goal of becoming a published author. As an amateur photographer, she takes photos that ‘make her look twice’ for Instagram.
She’s added Writerly Wisdoms, to her personal blog, about tips from author, illustrator and storyteller workshops. She also added reviews of picture books from a teacher’s perspective. Why? ‘…because Picture Books are a child’s first interaction with literacy.’
