Currently based in Adelaide, SA, I wrote and illustrated my first picture book in primary school – a magical fantasy inspired by a holiday to Melbourne. Since then I have tried writing different genres, initially producing a manuscript for a novel targeted at young adults, before discovering a love of writing for children.
It is the intellectual challenge of encouraging young children’s development combined with the uninhibited joy of letting my inner child create stories that will spark their imaginations that motivate and inspire me.
As a child, my favourite picture book was “The Island of the Skog” by Steven Kellogg. Its bright illustrations, sympathetic characters and exciting yet compassionate story are entertaining and engaging. I also still maintain my childhood love of Enid Blyton’s “The Folk of the Faraway Tree” and “The Famous Five” series.
Travel is a passion of mine and I love having adventures and being challenged. I draw inspiration from my own experiences, feelings and aspirations as I believe it is the perspectives and motivations of the characters that really bring atmosphere to any story and engage the imagination of the reader. I am always chasing new and exciting adventures but it is remembering the small adventures and big dreams that I had as a child that inspires my stories.
