Arthur the Ant (part 3)
By Artelle Lenthall
Merlin patted Arthur’s thorax firmly “I see now why you are not acting like yourself, but if there was ever a time you need to think Arthur it’s now. Calm down. Guinn and your parents need you!” Merlin removed the consoling limb and shouted as he ran “Now I'll gather the soldier ants and you can tell them your plan.” “Plan... plan... I don’t have a plan...yet!” Arthur gathered himself, sat down and madly began sketching on the ground.
By the time Merlin had returned Arthur had a rescue plan and was giving orders. “It is vital that the tunnelling teams build strong soil towers as they go and all four teams must meet at the accident site at the same time to eradicate or at least significantly reduce the risk of cave in”, Arthur shouted. Then speaking much more quietly and urgently “and we don’t have much time, an hour at the most and only if one or two not all four supports are down.” Arthur paced in front of the rescue site listening to Miss Major instructing the soldiers on the finer points of his plan. All he could do now was wait knowing that with only fifteen minutes to go every moment was precious. Merlin smiled despite himself as he joined his friend. He’d never seen Arthur move so fast. “It will be O.K. Arthur.”
Arthur shook his head, “Oh I hope so Merlin, I’d never forgive myself if my crazy dreams were the cause of all those ants dying and my parents, Guinn crushed, I couldn't bear it!”
“Crazy dreams?” came a familiar voice, “What nonsense, those tunnels are amazing!”
“Dad!” Arthur jumped up, “Mum? Guinn?”
“They’re fine son! Everyone’s fine. I hear the rescue plan was yours. You’re incredible son, I'm so proud of you.”
“Thanks Dad”, Arthur beamed
“Oh… and just so you know, that was no accident. That last soil tower had hollow sections... we saw them when it fell.” Arthur didn't hear his dad, he had raced off to find his mum and Guinn. Merlin, however, took Arthur’s father over to Miss Major to tell his story and it wasn't long before he saw Big Billy brought before Council to explain exactly what went wrong with Arthur’s now completed Project Camelot.
