Great Bites For Girls - Big Bad Bunnies by Danny Katz
Published by Penguin Books Australia
Sandra is not scared of a lot of things, however bunnies are not one of those things. It all started when her Grandpop found a bunny on the side of the road and gave it to Sandra to care for.
Well the bunny didn’t appreciate her care one bit and that’s exactly what happened. It bit her and hopped off to hide in the laundry. The RSPCA man had to get the bunny out and ever since that day, Sandra had been terrified of them.
Everywhere she went, she seemed to encounter bunnies. Like the time at the carnival in the city, after riding the rollercoasters, Sandra’s brother Hamish insisted on going to the petting zoo. Sandra begins to actually have fun chasing around after a goose. This causes Hamish no end of anguish when he realises he is totally terrified of the flapping animal. That’s when it happened. A soft fluffy something brushed the back of Sandra’s leg.
A nose-twitching, eyelash-batting, cotton-tailed Big Bad Bunny. Sandra’s natural instinct kicked in, and that’s exactly what she did. She booted that bunny off her foot and fled the zoo. Only to run into a giant sized polka dot bunny (man dressed in a bunny suit.) You can imagine her disdain when that big yellow polka dotted bunny gave her a hug and bounced off.
Everyone laughed at Sandra’s bunny predicament and she finally realised her bunny fear was actually pretty funny. She decided her fear may never leave her completely but one day she might be okay with it. Besides, the petting zoo expedition wasn’t a total bust. She found out what her brother Hamish was truly scared of. You can imagine how that one will end.
This was a refreshing first person narrative which kept you right amongst the action, hearing Sandra’s every thought and deed. It was a fine example of a kid learning to laugh at herself, which I think is vital for children to realise as they grow. I enjoyed this over the top tale and the fabulous illustrations helped to highlight the hilarity of the story. I would recommend this to kids aged 6-8.
