Two Tales Of Twins by Ursula Dubosarsky
Published by Christmas Press Picture Book
Artemis and Apollo: Twins of the moon and the sun: Artemis and Apollo were born on the island of Delos because their mother Leto could never give birth on solid land. The twins were very bright, and their father Zeus, the King was very proud. When a hideous dragon named Python threatens the safety of the twin’s mother, Apollo defends her fiercely with a bow and arrow, defeating the dragon.
Meanwhile, Zeus was promising Artemis anything she could possibly want. She asked for lots of friends, and lots of pets. One day, as she was roaming the mountains, she happened upon a giant named Tityos. The giant also threatened the life of her mother, so the twins defeated him with their bows and arrows.
They grew to be great warriors, and Apollo rode his chariot led by the sun across the sky each day, while Artemis rode her chariot back again at night led by the moon.
Romulus and Remus: The boys brought up by a wolf: fearing for their safety Rhea, set her twin boys in a basket. She lay the basket in the River Tiber, in the hope that someone would find the twins and care for them, but someone didn’t. A wolf found them instead. The babies were frightened and started to cry, but the wolf cared for them just like she was one of their own. One day when the wolf was out hunting, a shepherd and his wife came upon the babies playing in the forest. They took the babies in and adopted them as their own. The wolf howled in sadness, but she let the boys go. As the boys grew, they knew they were different and they longed to make a great city of their own.
Now boys will be boys and the boys quarrelled over who to name their great city after. In the end from Romulus won the fight and founded the city all by himself. He called it Rome.
This was a fun retelling of two great tales, with unique and captivating illustrations that I think children ages 6-8 would enjoy.
