Doctor Elbows And The Diamond of Yunxi by Angela Kirin
Published by Palmer Higgs
18 year old Gillian Roberts will never live up to her father’s expectations of becoming a doctor in her home town of Crumpia. Her work with rare and exotic plants with possible healing properties certainly won’t, but with the encouragement of her father’s friend Reg Delaney, Gillian soldiers on in her research.
She is somewhat of a recluse, spending endless hours in her laboratory, desperate to prove to her father that her work is not in vain, when one night, a terrible accident occurs. Gillian takes a fall into the plant enclosure, and is near death when the plants she has come to cultivate, heal her and give her incredible strength.
Although Gillian’s new powers are just getting established, it couldn’t have come at a better time. The city of Crumpia has fallen under a terrible wave of crime and Gillian suspects the infamous Taipan is at the centre of their woes.
That is until she learns of the incredible diamond of Yunxi. Rumoured to have sinister powers to influence people for the worse, now on display in the Crumpia Museum. The expedition party that travelled to China to recover the diamond many years earlier, were ambushed with no one surviving. Or so it was thought, however there was one survivor, a young boy.
Gillian starts calling herself Doctor Elbow’s after the people demand to know her superhero name. She begins to put her new found powers to the test, when she intercepts the theft of the diamond from the museum. That is where she encounters a mysterious young man who travels with a fearsome tiger companion, and calls himself The Protector. He reveals his purpose for wanting to return the diamond to China. The Yunxi diamond is cursed, and The Protector blames the escalating problems in Crumpia, for its presence in the city.
Gillian puts two and two together, realising that the young boy that was thought to be missing, is actually The Protector. Caught up in saving the citizens of Crumpia, Gillian is astounded when news of two more super heroes are roaming the streets of Crumpia.
Keen to find out who else is in competition, Gillian eventually joins forces with a girl who calls herself The Barnacle, a guy who calls himself The Great Lump and The Protector, to crack the Taipan’s crime ring.
Gillian and her awesome pals, with their super hero powers and ability to work as a team, eventually expose a prominent figure in the city as the Taipan. They all agree that the Protector should be the one to return the diamond to its rightful place, and there ends the tale of Doctor Elbows and the diamond of Yunxi.
This was quite an epic journey, with each of the characters gradually finding their voice and claiming their place in the salvation of Crumpia. I believe this would best be suited to a Young Adult audience due to the age of the protagonist’s, some adult suitable language and a moderate violence level. Confident readers will certainly enjoy this story.
