EJ Spy School: Puppy Alert by Susannah McFarlane
Published by Scholastic Australia
We join EJ on another adventure. This time, she is called to the Shine academy Code Room. Of course she has to solve the code before she finds out her mission. Codes are just like maths and EJ loves maths. She works hard to crack the code and finds herself on the way to Animal Rescue in the Mission Tube.
At the Animal Rescue Centre, EJ meets A1 and Agent Vet, where they tell her she will be learning to help and rescue animals. EJ changes into her uniform and begins her first assignment. Feeding the baby monkey. Next she learns how to help animals by listening to their hearts with a special tool. If the animal’s heart is beating fast, then it is upset. She also learns to strap the tail of a hurt Joey.
EJ is doing great in her animal rescue training, so A1 and Agent Vet, send her on a mission to find the five missing puppies. The catch is, the clues are all in code. Before EJ sets off, Agent Vet tells her the Shine motto. “A good agent is a calm agent.”
When EJ sets off on her mission, she doesn’t feel calm. When she begins to read the clues, she realises, if she keeps calm, it helps her think.
EJ solves the clues, and finds the puppies, but there is a problem. One is missing. She looks all around for another clue, but there are no more. Then she hears a “Yelp”. EJ follows the sound and she finds the missing puppy, but something is wrong. She puts her hand on the puppy’s chest and feels that his heart is beating very fast. EJ remembers her training. She pats the puppy until he is calm then she lifts him up. EJ realises that his leg is hurt. She straps the pup’s leg, just like she learned when she strapped the joey’s tail.
EJ returns to the Animal Rescue Centre after a very successful rescue mission, where she gains her Animal Rescue Badge. With the pups and the monkey jumping over her, EJ decides it was her best Spy School Lesson yet.
I really enjoyed this early chapter book reader. The codes were fun, yet challenging, which I think kids aged 5-7 will thoroughly enjoy solving. Once again, I loved that the lessons EJ learns in Spy School, she then has to apply all by herself, without anyone prompting her or helping her.
The story is fast paced, and exciting, and the awesome illustrations, help us to get to know and love EJ’s character, more and more with each story. I actually read this entire book to my almost three year old and she listed the whole way through. We will definitely be waiting on the next instalment.
