The Bush Book Club By Margaret Wild
Published by Scholastic Australia
Bilby's friends love to read and are members of the Bush Book Club, but Bilby has his mind on other things! His friend, Echidna reads while snug in bed. Kangaroo hops and reads. Koala loves fantasy stories and reads in the old, gum tree. And then there's Crocodile, a big softie who let’s his bird friends sit on his head while he reads stories that make him cry.
But books do not interest Bilby, he just wants to do handstands, somersaults and cartwheels. Anything but read or become involved the 'Bush Book Club'. But soon, he becomes bored playing by himself and decides to sneak in to listen to a 'Book Club' meeting. He hides behind a bookshelf, quickly becomes bored and falls asleep. When he wakes up, everyone's gone! The doors are locked! So what does Bilby do surrounded by nothing but books? The outcome is creative and delightful.
Margaret Wild is one of Australia's favourite children's book authors and this warm story holds a wonderful message about what it truly means to love books. Coupled with Ben Wood's charming illustrations, 'The Bush Book Club is definitely a 'must read' for pre-schoolers.
