One Night by Penny Matthews
Published by Scholastic Australia
This book offers a lovely and engaging view on the birth of a child on Christmas Eve. The book is set in that moment just before midnight when all the animals in the yard can discuss their part in the birth. The Donkey proudly tells of how the mother rode him, the sheep claims the blanket made of their wool. All the animals claim a part in that special night.
This is a beautifully written and illustrated book telling a story that holds special meaning but it is not presented as a bible story or connected to any religion. This is the perfect book for those teachers or parents who would like their children to understand the meaning of Christmas and why people celebrate it without pushing the overtones of any religion. At no point in the book are the names Mary, Joseph or Jesus Christ used.
The book is perfect for introducing children to the story and meaning of Christmas, using the gentle and lovely voices of the animals and their pride in helping on a special night.
