Published by Walker Books
Sue Whiting’s latest picture book, A Swim in the Sea has arrived in time for Summer.
Bruno’s waited so long and finally the day is here. Today he will swim in the sea – the big blue sea.
Too excited to eat breakfast, Bruno helps Dad load up the car for their beach adventure. Together with Mum, Dad, Tessa and the family dog they pile into the car and set-off.
It was bigger than anything he had ever seen, the sparkly blue jelly like ocean stretching out to touch the sky.
With only a hop, skip and a jump to big blue sea, Bruno was away. The salty breeze against his face, the scorching sand beneath his feet while all the time the big blue sea beckoning him.
The water now closer, the sand now wet, Bruno could almost taste his first ocean swim. A CRASH, THUMP and BOOM followed by a foamy white monster chased Bruno along the shore. His swim a fading dream as his courage washed away with the waves.
He didn’t care about the treasures in the rocks or the exotic creatures his parents had to show him. Bruno was scared and wanted to be alone.
With a little encouragement from Mum and Dad and little ribbing from Tessa, Bruno overcomes his fears. He learns that the sea is not too much different from his paddling pool at home, just a lot bigger.
This is a wonderful story for children aged 3-5. It will help them understand you should never be afraid to try new things.
