Mike the Spike by Stella Tarakson
Published by New Frontier Publishing
One of the most dreaded embarrassments at school is getting nits, that itchy feeling that leads to being pointed at. Mike the Spike loves his red hair that is gelled into spikes and when he realises that the itchy feeling means nits, he is terrified that he has to get his hair cut.
Rather than telling his Mum Mike suffers through a day of terrible itching and several failed attempts of fixing the problem himself. Eventually the teacher, the class, and his Mum all know and the problem is resolved.
A book that emphasizes the importance of talking to your Mum and asking for help and that how things might have been done in Granddad’s day is not how it might be done today.
As nits are an everyday problem at school and treatments are so easy this is a book that is a must read for every 6+ year old so that the problem is understood and treated quickly. Just be prepared that as you read the book that free hand sneaks up to scratch that eerie feeling in your hair!
