The Boy From Snowy River by Edwina Howard

Big Spills Water World, is the most awesome water park on the Gold Coast and George wants more than anything to visit it. Mumblegum is literally in the sticks, and a long way from Big Spills, but Gran hits on a plan to win $500 to get him there. She enters George, (Who shall be known as Andrew for the entry form) into the Stockman’s Cup at the Dargan’s ridge festival.
George is perplexed as to how he will ride a bicycle in the competition. Gran says, not your bicycle, Bandicoot, their stock horse who basically spends all day hanging out with a crow named Croak.
They saddle up Bandicoot, bring Croak along for the ride and George finds himself in the midst of the festival, full of boring food stalls like Mr Harrison’s Nu Cheez goats cheese. George laments there is not one kid’s ride among them.
The race is off to a gallop and George is pushed out of the way by a fellow wearing a Clancy of the Overflow Plumbing T shirt. Clancy wants to win, but Bandicoot wants to win more, when Croak appears, on the track. He scare’s Clancy’s horse and Bandicoot wins the race fair and square.
Except, not everyone agrees, and they challenge George’s win, telling him he isn’t even old enough to enter. A kerfuffle breaks out with Grand at the helm. Someone has let the goats from the Nu Cheez out. They are heading down Dadman’s drop, and someone has to save them, that someone is of course is George.
In the spirit of the Man From Snowy River, George tears down Dadman’s drop on Bandicoot, a feat not even Clancy of the Overflow would attempt. George rescues the goats, claiming the $500 dollar reward that Mr Harrison offered to save them.
Gran scolds George about doing something so dangerous, but George has a retort of his own. He figures Gran was responsible for the goats. The motley crew returns home, and George is looking forward to his next adventure. They are off to Big Spill Water World….
This was such a fun modern day retelling of the Man From Snowy River. The Clancy of the Overflow joke may be lost on the kids, but I thought it hilarious. Another engaging, fast paced read that will no doubt capture the attention of children aged 6-8.
