Ella Diaries Ballet Backflip by Meredith Costain
Published by Scholastic Australia
Following on from “Double Dare You”, “Ballet Backflip” is the second in the “Ella Diaries” series. One glance at the pretty pink and mauve cover suggests that “Ballet Backflip” is very much a book for girls who are made of ‘sugar and spice and everything nice’ and this first impression is confirmed when the story begins with a recount of Ella’s Saturday morning ballet class and the excitement generated by an upcoming recital.
Written in first person, “Ballet Backflip” manages to look very much like a girl’s diary. The font is pretty and every ‘’i” is lovingly dotted with a heart. Misspelt words are neatly crossed out and rewritten. The pages are peppered with simple sketches, the occasional diagram and explanatory notes. However, more than simply looking right, “Ballet Backflip” lives up to the promise of its clever presentation by delivering a thoughtful and engaging peek at who Ella is – her hopes and dreams, her disappointments and achievements.
Aimed squarely at primary aged readers, “Ballet Backflip” is a must read for every girl who enjoys being a girl.
