A New friend for Marmalade by Alison Reynolds
Published by The Five Mile Press
A delightful picture book concerned with friendship and the acceptance of others.
Ella, Maddy, and Marmalade the cat are best friends. Their sunny day starts with the happy girls building a cubby house. Toby, the boy from across the road, arrives wearing his cape to join in. “Ella shrugged and Maddy sighed” – (I love this!). They do not want to play with the boy.
The girls decide to build a sandcastle city. Toby is desperate to join in the fun but cartwheeling through the sand pit he ruins it. The girls are not happy with him. Poor old Toby can’t even stroke Marmalade the right way in Ella and Maddy’s eyes. Ella and Maddy get crankier and crankier but Marmalade is enjoying the fun boy.
Until – Toby turns on the water to fill the sandcastle’s moat. Poor old Marmalade is not only drenched but stuck up a tree!! Will Toby and his cape be able to save the day and make friends with Ella and Maddy?
Heath McKenzie’s gorgeous illustrations add to the innocence of the story. His outlined pictures with intermittent splashes of colour look as though a child has begun colouring the pages. I love how the text cleverly skips and weaves across the pages just like a child playing. It is the combination of the text and illustrations complementing each other, which makes the entire picture book pleasing to the eye.
All our little readers will love A New Friend for Marmalade – who couldn’t simply fall in love with the title?
