'Welcome Home' Written & Illustrated by Christina Booth
Published by Ford Street Publishing
This is the fourth picture book from award winning author Christina Booth.
'Welcome Home' holds a very important environmental message. It is an emotive tale of a boy who dreams that a whale is calling him. He wakes, seeks her out and realises the whale is making her journey home after a long time away. Throughout the story the boy interprets the whales calls into a story of what she has seen.
"Sometimes she is full of joy. Sometimes she is sad. It tugs at my heart as I listen."
Christina's book raises awareness in young readers to the long history of whale hunting. She touches on how this might make a whale feel. The part I loved in particular is when the story ended with hope and joy. 'Welcome Home' tugs at the heart strings, but it also tells why she wrote the story.
Christina also provides some very educative facts about whales and mentions environmental organisations i.e. 'Greenpeace' and 'Sea Shepherds'. I believe this would encourage a reader to think about their own environment.
Can history be forgiven? Good question! Thankfully with books like these the young may grow to think about it more and care for the future of our wildlife and home.
Beautifully written and richly illustrated. Christina Booth will be very deserving of another literature prize. Highly recommended reading for young children, but also a wonderful message for readers of all ages.
