My First Day at School written by Meredith Costain
& Illustrated by Michelle Macintosh
Published by Windy Hollow Books
This book is a must for any young one about to undertake the adventure of a lifetime – school.
Meredith’s heart warming book speaks to children on their level and reassures them on what is both an exciting and daunting time in their life.
We are introduced to four gorgeous little souls – Ari, Amira, Zach and Zoe. Mrs Mellor is entrusted with their start to school life and immediately helps familiarise her students with their new surroundings.
Zach is anxious to begin his new journey, Amira not so much. Ari feels there are too many rules and Zoe just takes it in her stride.
Michelle Mackintosh’s illustrations are warm and inviting. Each page is vibrant and comes together beautifully with Meredith’s story.
Making new friends while learning along the way is a positive message to share with children who are about to embark on their first day of school.
Ari, Amira, Zach and Zoe quickly discover that school going to be a wonderful new adventure.
I enjoyed how Meredith shows the reader the characters experiencing different aspects of their school day with the turn of each new page. She doesn’t just address the group as a whole but instead addresses their individual insecurities, feelings of being overwhelmed and alone.
