What now baby bears? is the new picture book by Toni Brisland and Emma Stuart.
Mother Bear and her two adventurous cubs live in an untouched paradise. Their days are spent frolicking with animal friends and enjoying their lush surroundings.
As the seasons change and their wildlife friends move on so must Mother Bear and her cubs. They find a warm place to hibernate for the winter and settle in for a long rest. When they wake they find everything has changed.
Humans have brought their concrete playground into their wilderness home. Gone are the nuts and berries and many of their baby animal friends.
Mother Bear is left to source food for her cubs forcing her into man’s territory. Tragically an accident renders the cubs homeless and temporarily motherless.
Man then asks the cubs ‘What now baby bears?’
With help from Man, Mother Bear recovers and rejoins her cubs but life as they knew it has changed forever. Can bear and human learn to co-exist?
Emma Stuart’s illustrations are rich in colour and compliment Toni’s story. Her depiction of Mother Bear and her cubs invite the reader into a carefree world of simpler times.
Toni addresses the serious issue of man’s encroachment into nature. She educates the reader about the dangers of man and unsuspecting animal coming together.
This is a beautiful picture book perfectly suited for the 2 – 5 year market.
This is a heart-warming story that addresses the need to be vigilant about our wildlife friends and remember we all must exist as one.
