Starting School written by Jane Godwin
& Illustrated by Anna Walker
Published by the Penguin Group
Tim, Hannah, Sunita, Joe and Polly are all off to school for the first time. Before the big day each child faces a range of emotions that such a major event brings for both parents and their children. On the first day, the five become part of a classroom of 21 children and meet their new teacher Miss Quick.
'Starting School' demonstrates stages possible in a first school day that children will likely experience i.e making new friends, rules, staying safe, activities, what to bring etc. It also provides examples of the strengths and vulnerabilities some children may reveal when settling into a new environment. Parent separation can be very scary for a child, but this book could be a wonderful aid to ease the process for one who is is either nervous or shy.
Jane and Anna have created a informative work for brand new students who don't know what to expect on their first day at school. The illustrations are clear and consistent. Recommended for ages 3 and up.
