The Andy Flegg Survival Guide To Losing Your Dog, Your Dad And Your Dignity In 138 Days

Andy Flegg’s mum has promised him an Xbox for his twelfth birthday if he writes at least one sentence, using a new word, in his diary every day. Andy hates writing and thinks it’s only for losers; he rather pick up dog poo than spend time doing boring writing, but he starts his diary anyway, so that he can finally acquire his very own Xbox at the end of one hundred and thirty-eight days.
Andy discovers many peculiar new words in his dictionary; adjectives, nouns and verbs such as snirtle, bogglish, skookum and mulligrubs, and he exploits them to full effect in his amusing and entertaining diary disclosures.
Unfortunately for the effervescent Andy, his happy world begins to collapse when his father decides to leave home, his dog dies and his house accidently burns down. Even with all these devastating events, Andy continues to write his daily diary and quickly discovers that he actually enjoys the art of writing.
Andy’s diary gradually reveals the curious behavior of all the significant adults in his life, all his school friends, the type of neighbourhood he lives in, and the evening activities of the mysterious birdbath thief. Although Andy’s parents prove to be dysfunctional, Andy manages to keep his cheeky sense of humour, even with his numerous pubescent anxieties, the most embarrassing one being, having a ‘thingy’ that refuses to behave itself in the presence of his love interest, the exceedingly pulchritudinous Amber Shane.
Mark Pardoe has written an hilarious account of a young boy’s experience of the pains of growing up, at a time of extreme emotional upheaval. Whilst some of Andy’s hapless predicaments will have the reader laughing out loud, the story also gently instills the essential feelings of empathy, enabling readers to recognize themselves in Andy’s own character.
Definitely a good read for boys, although girls will also enjoy the mischievous humour.
