Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy written by Lynley Dodd
Published by Penguin Books
We follow the dashing Hairy Maclary who lives in Donaldson’s dairy. (Dairy means the shop in NZ speak) "Out of the gate, and off for a walk", goes Hairy Maclary as he trots out on a suburban adventure. Along the way and at the turn of each page, he meets a new and endearing character, with names that you can never forget. For example, Bottomly Potts all covered in spots, (Dalmatian) Bitzer Maloney all skinny and bony (Greyhound), Hercules Morse as big as a horse, (Great Dane) and Schnitzel Von Crum with a very low tum (Basset hound).
They all happily journey along with Hairy, until they meet ScarFace Claw, the toughest Tom in town. Hairy and his motley crew of muts, go scampering back home, and of course, “straight back to bed.”
Every time one of the dogs is mentioned, the author uses their whole name, which creates a great rhythm and repetition. This is the first in a whole series that introduces us to the delightful antics of Hairy Maclary and the other animals in his hood. The illustrations are so endearing in this hard cover 30th anniversary edition. It’s not hard to see why kids have fallen in love with Hairy Maclary, especially with the excellent rhythm, rhyme and repetition that Lynley Dodd is so expert in achieving.
But that's not all. I was searching for some stock images and I found the official website. It has the most awesome down-loadables, for everything you need if you want to have your own Hairy Maclary themed kid’s party, or even just colouring pages.
I have read this book often at my little girl’s play group, and it never ceases to entertain as a truly engaging read aloud book.
