Imagine A City written & Illustrated by Elise Hurst
Published by Scholastic Australia
From the very first exquisitely intricate pencil sketch, Elise Hurst challenges the reader, young and old to imagine a train to take us away on a wonderful journey with her. To a world without edges, where fish can take you flying high in the sky. To a land of measureless treasure where the past knows no boundaries and the world is our teacher. Ms Hurst shows us how to imagine a land of such wonder in the palm of our hands.
This is a visually stunning book. The sparse text and simple rhyme, provokes the reader’s imagination effectively, drawing you to ponder every detail on each page, whisking you away into the land of Imagine A City.
The illustrations reminded me of those found in the Spiderwick Chronicles, but they also have a distinct Narnia feel to them, with Lions and Rabbits and Bears dressed in dapper and dandy outfits, depicted alongside the humans, as if it were as natural as the air they all breathe.
I thoroughly enjoyed this visual masterpiece, which I think will appeal to children from ages 3 to 103. I can see this book being studied by visual arts students, as Elise Hurst’s skill in illustration is nothing short of magical.
