Gracie & Josh by Susanne Gervay
Susanne Gervay and Serena Geddes have teamed up to create a beautifully depicted picture book, Gracie & Josh.
Gracie, a squiggly black spider and her movie making brother extraordinaire, Josh venture out to set the movie world on fire.
Josh the older of the two clearly dotes over his sister but as his health takes a turn for the worse it is Gracie who takes over the protective role.
Based around the ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ this is a beautifully written and illustrated story of a boy and his sister making the best of everyday, with no obstacle too big or small to overcome.
Gracie’s innocence is charming until she is faced with the realisation of her brother’s condition when he loses his beanie during filming.
The ‘c’ word is never mentioned and it’s not a story about fighting this crippling disease. Instead it portray’s love, togetherness and respect.
Before too long everyone from the hospital ward is joining in on Gracie & Josh’s big movie adventure.
My favourite is the last page where Gracie and Josh are together. A simple illustration of two siblings holding hands but the way they are looking at one another is touching to the point of goosebumps.
Other books by Susanne Gervay include: I Am Jack, Ships in the Field and Butterflies. Susanne is the proud recipient of the Lady Cutler Award for Distinguished Service to Children’s Literature and a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM). www.sgervay.com
