Juliet nearly a Vet - The Big Flood by Rebecca Johnson
Published by Penguin Books Australia
Another in the Juliet nearly a Vet series, The Big Flood sees ten-year-old Juliet helping out her vet mother again, this time in the face of flooding following heavy rains.
It’s been pouring with rain and the paddock at the end of Juliet’s street looks like a lake. Some alpacas are stranded above the floodwaters on a raised area of land. Juliet’s mother and the alpacas’ owners get very wet and dirty ferrying the creatures to dry land, but Juliet and friend Chelsea help dry the animals off and look after them once they return to safety.
Juliet is sure other animals must be stranded by floodwaters too. She must convince her father to go out in the canoe before the water rises further.
So begins Juliet’s quest to find and save local distressed wildlife from the flood. Before long, Juliet and her family and friends find a mouse, an echidna, a blue-tongue lizard and a stick insect that all need help. Juliet finds solutions for many issues as the stressful quest continues- that’s why she’s nearly a vet.
This is a funny and exciting chapter book that has an immersive narrative and a serious message about caring for animals.
