Outback Lullaby by Sally Odgers
Published by Scholastic Australia
Outback Lullaby is one of those gorgeously illustrated books that you will love to read with your young child as a book before bedtime. In truth, the illustrations star in this book as the illustrator, Lisa Stewart, has used a range of mediums including watercolours, gouache, collage, rice papers, and pencils to create stunningly beautiful depictions of native Australian animals.
Written in a soft, flowing rhyme, Outback Lullaby is easy to read and young pre-school age children will learn little facts about some native Australian animals while enjoying the dreamy words that lead gently into sleep. The final words, “Now my darling, close your eyes To dream of outback lullabies,” directly encourage your little one to go to sleep, making this an enchanting bedtime book to read to your little one when snuggled in bed.
Some of the animals in this beautiful book will be less familiar to little ones including bilby, spotted quoll, brolga, and thorny devil, but the book does include more familiar Australian animals such as emus and kangaroos as well. Each of the animals has been beautifully illustrated and the rhyming text cleverly incorporates real facts about where each animal sleeps (or doesn’t sleep in the case of bilby) throughout the night.
This is a delightful, feel good book with some lovely illustrations. It’s the perfect book to finish a busy day with your pre-school age child.
