Return of the Dinosaurs by Bronwyn Houston
Published by Magabala Books
Specialist publisher of Indigenous Children’s Literature, Magabala Books, does not disappoint with this gem of a book for younger readers.
This book is a beautiful welcome and introduction to country for the Kimberley Coast, particularly Broome. Add every kids’ favourite beasts, dinosaurs, and you have a rollicking tale that will delight children as they explore Broome through the eyes of the locals and the dinosaurs.
The unique style of illustrations paint a beautiful picture, and are testimony to the natural beauty of the Kimberly Coast. One in particular, an illustration of the Golden Staircase to the Full Moon, accurately portrays one of the natural phenomena of the area. Though the reviewer has not yet had the pleasure to visit Broome, she did her research by asking someone who has seen the Staircase, and the illustrations catch the magic perfectly.
Imagining what the world would be like if the dinosaurs returned is a captivating way to introduce children to a remote part of Australia, and what life is like in this area.
Congratulations must go to Bronwyn Houston and Magabala books for this stunning addition to the body of Indigenous Australian Children’s Literature.
