Alana Oakley- Mystery and Mayhem by Poppy Inkwell
Published by Big Sky Publishing
Starting High School is a strange mix and fear and excitement for any preteen, but self-sufficient, sensible Alana Oakley and her mix of old and new friends take it in their stride- mostly. Still there's nothing Maddie, Sofia, Khalilah and Alana can't get through together, even PE with 'crazy strict' Coach Kusmuk and even crazier times with Alana's ever distracted mother and her ditsy friends. The girl's shared love of music and their technological skills both bring the girls together and is instrumental (pun intended) in helping them settle into life in and out of school.
Preteens will love the way this eclectic mix of young women negotiate everyday school life problems, and the mystery of the missing locket, with no adult assistance, if anything 'they' assist the adults! Parents and teachers will love the loyalty they have to each other and their families and the multicultural backdrop of this book.
Recommended for 10-12 year old girls
Poppy Inkwell's writing easily incorporates inner city culture and a sense of fun into an engaging plot of belonging, loss and acceptance with a couple of unusual subplots.
