Dragonfly Song by Wendy Orr
Published by Allen & Unwin
Dragonfly Song is a fantasy adventure that follows the story of Aissa who is abandoned as a baby and does not learn her name until she is twelve. She is raised as a slave but decides her only way to escape is to take on the Bull King. She is strong, fast and feisty, but to survive she will need to work out who she really is.
This story is set around four thousand years ago during the Great Aegean Bronze Age civilisation. Poignant to the story is the half-man, half-bull Minotaur and the importance of bull dancing. Aissa takes part in this risky sport which involves clever moves whilst fighting with the bull. This action takes place in the second half of the story whilst the first half creates Aissa’s character.
The writing in this story is clever and goes between prose and verse. The verse pieces are short verse lines and give us great insight to Aissa’s thoughts, character and feelings.
Dragonfly Song will interest fantasy readers and also those with an interest in Ancient Greece. For ages 10+, enjoy.
