Clare and her Captain by Michael Morpurgo (CKT Kids review)
Published by Barrington Stoke Ltd
Clare is going on a holiday with her mum and dad to her Aunt Dora’s house. On the first day there, Clare is walking along the lane, exploring, when she finds a lamb. She picks up the lamb and looks around for someone who might own him. That is when she meets Thatcher Jones. An old hermit, who has an old horse named Captain. Clare immediately likes Captain and asks if she can come and visit him again. Thatcher says yes.
When Clare gets home she realises that her dad and Aunt Dora have something against Thatcher Jones. They tell her she is not to go over there, but that doesn’t stop Clare. She goes to visit Captain again the next day and takes him for a walk. On her way she is stopped by some newspaper reporters. They take a picture of Clare and Captain for the local paper.
But when Clare goes to visit again, Thatcher Jones is not there to answer the door.
Everything has changed.
This is a beautiful story about the way kindness and friendship can change people’s lives.
I really liked this book. Michael Morpurgo is one of my favourite authors, I love the way he makes me feel like I am a part of the story and I really like how he wove a true story from his wife’s childhood into this book. The book also has beautiful illustrations by Catherine Rayner.
I think both girls and boys 6-12 would really like the heart warming story of Clare and her Captain.
