Born to Sing by Sally Morgan

Born to sing is a short chapter book based around young Maddie who just loves to sing. She makes up songs and just love to sing anywhere and at anytime. Her parents think she has a beautiful voice and is very talented. Maddie also loves whales, as they love to sing to and desperately hopes to one day see them. These creatures really resonate with her and she even pretends to sing in whale.
So when Maddie’s parents surprise her with an impromptu trip to Shark bay to do some whale watching with her Mum and Nan, Maddie is beyond excited. It’s a dream come true.
After they pack up and journey from Perth to Shark bay the girls encounter a few mechanical problems with the car along the way. At what seems disastrous at first may just end up being a blessing in disguise. A few minor set backs won’t stop these keen whale watchers. Maddie, her Mum and Nan have a real spirit for adventure and despite a few hiccups along the way are determined to go whale watching at Shark Bay. I love the underlying theme in this story of how sometimes when we set out on an trip things don’t always go to plan but even through disappointment you have to look n the bright side and just go with the flow.
Maddie writes a beautiful song about the whales and really hopes to sing it to the whales. It is through song that she expresses herself and throughout there journey makes up songs with her Mum and Nan that carry them through the ups and downs of their trip.
Along the way they make some lovely new friends Harry and Terry who are also passionate about whales and who help them make it to see the whales. They share this magic experience with them and Maddie gets to sing her song for them and the whales.
For any young person who loves going on trips or loves to sing and write songs this is a great book to assist them on their reading journey. The beautiful black and white illustrations are also a lovely accompaniment to the story as they really give you a sense of who Maddie and her family are and the journey in which they experience.
This is a joyous story and well worth the read.
