OH, ALBERT! by Davina Bell
Published by Penguin Australia
What’s more, Albert’s family is a busy one and so Albert causes more than his fair share of doggy dramas while alone at home.
When Dad is at Pilates, when Sammy is at ballet, when Tom is at school, when Fern is at swimming and when Mum is out cycling, Albert eats all sorts of unlikely things. Every time it happens the family becomes very cross with Albert. Dad even threatens to send him back where he came from.
It’s when everyone is out at Michael’s football match that Albert finally comes undone. He eats the whole planet! Well, actually, he eats the small chocolate planet on top of Michael’s birthday cake, but it’s just as dangerous as eating a real planet…because chocolate is really, really bad for dogs.
At the vet, with Albert very unwell, the family begins to feel sorry they’ve growled at Albert in the past. They realise how much they love him.
This is a simple book about caring for a pet. It provides subconscious prompts about dog boredom, natural dog behavior, not leaving things lying around for a dog to swallow and how busy families can easily lose sight of how much they appreciate their pets until things go badly wrong.
While the overall tone of this picture book is of a happy and active family and their cared-for dog, there is much between the lines for parents to chat about with littlies. Highly recommended for all junior readers, especially very young dog owners.
