Tiny Timmy - Living the Dream by Tim Cahill
Published by Scholastic Australia
Socceroos legend and international player Tim Cahill must surely be idolised by football fans worldwide and in his chapter book, TINY TIMMY Living the Dream he describes the origins of his own football dream. While the book is fiction it is filled with enthusiasm for football (the game some call soccer) and the dreams a young boy has of representing his country in the sport.
Part of a Tiny Timmy series, this story, book three, is very up to the minute in that it recognises the growing interest in and talent for the game among females. One protagonist is Sienna, named after Cahill’s own daughter. This character is a highly skilled young soccer player. His other children’s names are featured as the names of additional children in the book.
Tiny Timmy is in a school soccer team and when new girl at school, Sienna, demonstrates talent for the game, she is welcomed into the team. Of course, there are the usual couple of kids who believe they are the best players and put other children down, but this doesn’t deter Tim and Sienna, even when there’s an opportunity to enter a soccer trick competition to be ball kids at a match featuring their idols in the Australian team. So begins excitement, anticipation, hopes and dreams and finally, hard-won success.
There’s a quirky touch to this book, in that many words are in bold type and have ‘added extras’ like arrows, caps, hyphens, underlining and more, all of which serve to somehow add physical energy to the text and propel the story forward.
Suitable for all boys and girls who have an interest in ‘the beautiful game’ or indeed any sport, this delightful story is a cheery and fun embodiment of what it takes in terms of hard work and commitment to begin living the dream.
