Noisy Nights by Fleur McDonald

There's nothing more than sinking into your bed at night and closing your eyes in the peace and quiet - unfortunately for Farmer Hayden things aren't to quite on his farm. For you see the animals on Farmer Hayden's farm got rather noisy at night. From cows mooing to dogs barking and even chirping crickets it was impossible for Farmer Hayden to get a goods night’s sleep.
Farmer Hayden asked nicely for the animals to be quiet, but they were being too noisy and didn't even hear him. The next night the noise grew even louder as even more animals joined the racket. With ear muffs on his head he yelled "Please be quiet everyone!' but again it was no good. As the days drew on Farmer Hayden got more tired and was desperate for sleep. He tried reasoning with them and spending time with them, but again they were moo-ing and maa-ing all night.
Giving up he wearily brings himself to his battered old chair and looks out across his farm and all his noisy animals. Soon he notices a peculiar thing - sheep jumping over the fence. "Farmer Hayden started to count. One, two, there, four, five, six..." and can you guess what happened next? He fell fast asleep along with all his other noisy animals enraptured with the sheep's display.
Noisy Nights is a modern interpretation of the counting sheep bed time ritual of children across the world and was beautifully told. I particularly loved that the animals also fell asleep counting sheep. The illustrations matched well and really helped add to the story, a well-rounded children's picture book.
