Wiggle and the Whale: a book of funny friends by Roger Priddy
Published by Priddy Books
The latest in the successful Alphaprints series by Priddy Books, is Wiggle and the Whale, a book of funny friends, written by Roger Priddy, with illustrations by Lindsey Sagar. Marketed as a fingerprint character book for sparking the creativity of young children, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised that there was more than meets the eye to this soft cover book.
Wiggle and the Whale is old-school fun from the outset. Using fingerprint painting to portray its animal characters, the cover is instantly interactive through its use of ‘touch and feel’, to engage curious young readers. My three-year-old son was hooked.
As we venture inside the story, what starts to emerge is an innovative use of real photographic images, combined with the fingerprint painting motif, and traditional illustrative techniques, to depict the colourful cast of animal friends.
Just as teachers do at pre-school, or the performers on Play School, Roger Priddy and illustrator Lindsey Sagar use real-life objects like feather dusters or pine cones, around which to create artwork. This is an ever popular technique designed to encourage recognition from children, and spark their imaginations for what they can create.
The story itself has a lovely message about friendship overcoming difference and it is a really good one for reading aloud. It is poetic and flowing, with lots of rhyming, and although the text is more dense than most picture books, your little one won’t be bored because it classic children story-telling and the illustrations jump off the page. I have immensely enjoyed reading it, and my son is actively engaged with it.
With the name of the popular Alphaprints series behind it, Wiggle and Whale has a lot to live up to and it doesn’t disappoint. It is sure to become a bedtime favourite for children and their parents!
